I remember when I was very young. My father would sit me by himself and tell me a story in the moonlight. He told a story about a professor who was very versed in many disciplines but one: swimming.

One day he was to travel across a deep river. But the only means was by canoe. The professor got to the river and found a little boy. He asked the boy the owner of the canoe to come and take him across for a price. The boy replied that he would do the job. “You little twig, what do you call yourself? Where is your strength to paddle the canoe?” the professor questioned. The boy replied that he had doing it for long. The professor concluded that since he knew many subjects, swimming would not be difficult to do and that even though the boat capsized, he would swim out. So he allowed the boy to take him.

Towards the tail end of the journey, the wave overwhelmed them overturned the canoe.. The professor then started floundering and drowning. The little boy who was a swimming expert came to his rescue and drove him to the shallow land.

 

The short story taught us that however knowledgeable we are, experience is the best teacher and that overconfidence is overcompetence.
